Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

What is a CEU?

A Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized method of recording participation and quantifying the time spent in non-academic credit education or professional development activities.  One CEU is awarded for each 10 hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience.

Ten hours of instruction = 1.0 CEU.

One hour of instruction = 0.1 CEU.

What Qualifies for CEUs?

CEUs are awarded for knowledge gained in learning activities that meet sound educational standards, but where grades are not given or depth and breadth are not sufficient for academic credit.  CEUs may be awarded for courses that also carry academic credit if the material meets criteria for continuing education units.  An individual may not receive both credit and CEUs for the same activity.  CEUs can’t be applied toward a degree.

CEUs can be awarded for many different formats and learning situations.  Examples include but are not limited to:

workshops

seminars

symposiums

conferences

traditional face-to-face classes

short courses

teleconferences

study groups

in-house training

Why are CEUs Used?

CEUs show evidence of an active interest in continuing education, your participation in such programs, and training in specialized areas.  Employers often look at CEUs as evidence of an employee’s knowledge in specialized areas.  CEUs are also used for renewing licenses by many licensing boards and professional organizations.

Does Continuing Studies Provide CEUs?

Continuing Studies provides general CEUs and is responsible for maintaining the CEU database, which stores all credits awarded for each individual.  In addition Continuing Studies also provides CEUs for some specific professional licensing boards.  We will work with specific boards to get approval of continuing education activities.

Examples of Past CEU Offerings:

Continuing Studies has worked with professional licensing boards to get approval for the Northern Plains Conference on Aging and Disability to offer CEUs specifically for nurses, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and nursing home administrators.

MSUM is an approved provider for the North Dakota Board of Social Work examiners and has offered CEUs for the non-credit option of courses such as Grant Writing Bootcamp or Resources for Working with the Elderly.

Contact the governing board for your profession regarding specific requirements for licensure and CEUs.  For other information regarding CEUs, e-mail us at contstdy@mnstate.edu
