Session 2..............“To Live Long and Die Healthy" John Shier RN, Ph.D. (thatguynurse) Maintaining good health for the lifespan is the opportunity and responsibility of each individual. This program examines the changes in the medical system and explains the fundamental requirements for maintaining good health.
Session 3..............“A Step Into My Shoes: The Impact of Sensory Changes in Later Life” Vickie Schmall Through experiential activities, attendees will "step into the shoes" of older adults and learn about the impact of sensory changes - loss of vision, taste, smell, touch, and hearing - can have on elders and on their independence, communication, and relationships.
Session 4 .............“Divided We Fail" Marlowe Kro & Janis Cheney Health care premiums and deductibles are climbing through the roof. There is a strong need to improve the health care system by making it more affordable, boosting quality and eliminating waste. Hear a discussion on how our leaders can tackle the people's issues.
Session 5 .............“Transportation Services/Considerations for the Elderly and Disabled” Lori Van Beek This session will provide information about public transportation required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for persons with disabilities, and general public demand responsive service in rural Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Session 6 .............“Managing Challenging Behaviors & Care for the Caregiver Jacqueline Marcell Jacqueline delves into creative behavioral techniques for managing the most difficult of elders. Share your most challenging eldercare dilemma for discussion and solutions! Focus on the caregiver and effective strategies for coping with guild, grief, stress, and frustration.
Session 7 .............“The Professional Patient: How to Make the Medical System Work for You" John Shier RN, Ph.D Today's patient must have the knowledge and skills required to navigate the American medical system effectively and to ensure the highest possible levels of service. This program explains the importance of being an active participant in the process of receiving medical and surgical care.
Session 8..............“The Deadly Triangle: Depression, Suicide & Alcohol in Late Life" Vicki Schmall A discussion of the relationship between depression, suicide, and alcohol in later life; identifying at-risk older adults; and considerations in intervention and treatment.
Session 9 .............“Sexuality and Living Well” Nancy Abrahamson Sexuality and intimacy are an integral part of living well. How we express ourselves throughout life, including when dealing with chronic disease, will help determine how we maintain emotional and physical well being. Learn what is and is not acceptable in healthcare facilities.
Session 10 ...........“Assistance/Service Dogs" Susan E. Johnson-Drenth, Vogel Law Firm Great Plains Assistance Dogs Foundation raises and trains service dogs to assist individuals with disabilities to gain greater independence. This presentation and demo will highlight what a service dog can do for a person living with disabilities.

A humorous presentation with which every caregiver can identify, and then the TEN ABSOLUTES, the real answers for what not to do and what to do instead. Use this tool to create positive communication in any difficult situation - two-year-olds, teenagers, bosses, significant other, clients, you name it!
Session 12 ...........“About Love” Zelko Leon, MD Dr. Leon will describe the three brain networks of love: Libido (sexual love), Attraction (romantic love), and Attachment (companionate love). Dr. Leon will talk about love as a mental illness making analogy with mood and addictive disorders, and about love as a mental health enhancer.
Session 13............“50 Ways to Love Your Mother/Gift Ideas for Again Parents and Others When All They Need is Love” Jane Monachelli When aging loved ones are in one room in your own home or a care center, they need many signals of being remembered. At the same time, they have little to no space for more stuff and even need help in getting rid of things rather than adding to the collection. Jane brings a heart full of love and shows how to share it in this unique situation.
Session 14 ...........“Weather or Not: Being Prepared for Emergencies Daryl Ritchison Weather is the most talked about subject in our culture, but occasionally it requires us to take action. Daryl Ritchison will give descriptions of different types of severe weather, safety tips, and planning strategies for all sorts of emergencies.
Session 15 ...........“Legislative Forum on Senior & Disability Issues” Janet Witt, MS, RD (This session is repeated in Session 20) Janet will discuss the key issues being discussed in Washington D.C. that may impact the health and welfare of North Dakota and Minnesota residents. Important issues include The Older Americans Act funding, Medicare reform, prescription drug issues, and Social Security.

Session 16 ...........“Finally! It Is All About You! At Last, Someone Who Knows and Cares!” Jo Huey Ms. Huey will discuss ten simple solutions for making staff turnover a thing of the past! In fact, you could have a waiting list - for staff! You could have staff so loyal they would voluntarily accompany you on a Hurricane Evacuation with your most difficult residents and stay a monthly! It's not too good to be true, it is true!
Session 17 ...........“Non-Alzheimer's Dementias" Rabecca Caillier, MD Dr. Caillier will provide an overview of Non- Alzheimer dementias including the frontotemporal dementias, dementias related to parkinsonism, vascular dementia and dementias related to infections.
Session 18............“Using Forgiveness to Heal Hurt and Betrayal" Vickie Schmall This session will explore forgiveness as a way to help oneself and others heal from hurt and betrayal. Then is it appropriate to forgive? Are some betrayals too painful to forgive? Does forgiving mean forgetting? The process of forgiveness is explored.
Session 19............“Special and Supplemental Needs Trusts" Susan E. Johnson-Drenth This presentation will discuss how you can have assets in a trust and keep SSI and Medical Assistance. Susan will discuss who can do a Special Needs Trust, and its advantages and disadvantages.

Session 22............“Macular Degeneration” Dr. Craig Mason This presentation will review the basic anatomy of the eye and retina, describe the signs and symptoms of macular degeneration, and briefly review the presumed etiologic factors of macular degeneration. Dr. Mason will also briefly discuss potential new therapies in development.
Session 23............“Sexuality in Later Life” Vicki Schmall This presentation will focus on the significance of intimacy and sexuality in the lives of older adults and issues surrounding late-life sexuality for both healthy and frail older adults. Resources will be shared, including an educational game, Sex & Aging: A Game of Awareness and Interaction.
Session 24............“How to See PEOPLE Not Problems" Heather J. Peters Understand what Disability Identity Development is and learn what implications it has for individuals with disabilities. Become aware of our biases and learn how increased awareness allows us to treat each person with respect.
Session 25............"Social Security: Today and Tomorrow" Janet Witt, MS, RD Social Security celebrated its 70th birthday in August 2005. Will this safety net continue to provide financial security to children, people with disabilities and seniors? Can Social Security really go broke? These and many other questions will be discussed. If you receive benefits, or pay FICA taxes, this session is for you.
