Bioscience Industry Courses at MSUM
Fall 2008

 

These are hybrid courses with content delivered on-line and face-to-face laboratory/discussion meetings on

 campus once a week (one evening, 6:00-8:30pm in MSUM Science Lab 216).

The online portion of the course uses the Desire2Learn (D2L) course management

system software; students will receive orientation to D2L

during the first face-to-face meeting of each class.

Introduction to Quality Assurance and Quality Control
 in the Bioscience Industry
Biology 490 / 590 - 4 credits
August 26 - December 9, 2008

 

This course is online with weekly face-to-face meetings in

MSUM Science Lab 216 on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:30pm

The course covers the origins, history of quality and the major concepts, theories, principles and founders; quality planning, assurance and improvement; the roles and responsibilities of quality assurance and quality control. Quality assurance is the planned and systematic activities implemented in a quality systematic activities implemented in a quality system so that quality requirements for a product or service will be fulfilled. Quality control is the observation techniques and activities used to fulfill requirements for quality.

 Working in a Regulated Bioscience Industry
Biology 490 / 590 - 4 credits
August 28 - December 11, 2008

 

This course is online with weekly face-to-face meetings in

MSUM Science Lab 216 on Thursdays from 6:00-8:30pm

This is the first course in the newly proposed Biotechnology Industry Certificate. The topics included in the course are: the basic structure of the regulated workplace; introduction to regulatory affairs, introduction to regulatory language: FDA and USDA; an overview of good practices; good laboratory practices (GLP), good manufacturing practices (GMP), and good clinical practices (GCP; introduction to quality systems; quality control, quality assurance, ISO9000, and six sigma; introduction to validation.

The requirements for 490 are at least junior standing in a bioscience or chemistry major.  The requirements for 590

are senior standing in a bioscience or chemistry major or the completion of a science related degree.
 

Note:  These courses are part of the newly proposed Biotechnology Industry Certificate.
