Of the Month Nominations in Most Recently Submitted Order

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Greg Greeley
  Address: 318 Grantham
  Nominee Email: bmgreeley@albanytel.com
     Nominated By: Jason King
     Date Submitted: 10/15/2002 11:36:27 AM
Reason: Greg has been an all-star resident this month. ALthough he could not attend 2
programs he asked if he could help out in another way. He ended up helping me
make my advertisements for the programs. Greg and I are in the same math class
and he has been somewhat of a tutor in helping me understand the information I
was having trouble with. He is one student that I can really talk to about my
own troubles. He is definitely the resident of the month in my opinion.

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Kaija Thorson
  Address: 407 Grantham
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: StephyG
     Date Submitted: 10/15/2002 11:38:27 AM
Reason: Kaija recently got her Nintendo64 stolen from her room, and despite her
efforts to find it, she did not. She handled the situation very maturly, for
losing $700 worth of equipment. She just deserves to be cheered up!

Of the Month Award: Community
  Nominee: 3rd Floor Nelson
  Address: 3rd Floor Nelson
  Nominee Email: N/A
     Nominated By: Jessica Faith Johnson
     Date Submitted: 10/15/2002 11:41:27 AM
Reason: 3rd Floor Nelson is a very special place to be, whether you're a resident or
just a visitor (we get a lot of those up here!). If you were to walk in the
circle that makes our pathways from one room to another, you'd find most of the
doors to the rooms wide open. We like it this way because we can go from room
to room and talk to one another. We're all very friendly and there's a lot of
trust among friends (and we certainly consider ourselves friends!). Various
posters and pictures hang on every door. Some are created by our RA, Heather
(who is always here to help us out, inspires us to be creative, and gives us
great things to do), others are gifts from floormates (like the boys on Crystal
and Meagan's door!), and some are homemade expressions of self so other people
can see what kind of things we like, from where we come, in what we're
majoring, etc. We're a pretty tight knit group of girls, which explains why
we're number two in Hall Olympics (soon to be number one! GO FRANCE!) and why
we really enjoy going to events: we're not just there to hang out with each
other; we're there to make new friends, which is why we get so many visitors up
here. One person might be up to see 5 people s/he knows in a single night.
Every girl on the floor is really supportive of everyone else, from helping
with Spanish homework to editing papers, styling hair and doing makeup, gabbing
and making popcorn, massive cheer-you-up sessions...we're all for one and one for all! We interact with other communities through cool events like the
Trading Places (trading lounges with 2nd Grantham to decorate), movie parties,
Hall Olympic events, and making friends from different floors and inviting them
here or going there. (I said we were a friendly bunch!) Everyone here really
cares about each other and about making 3rd Floor Nelson a great place to live,
study, and have a great time. It would be a great honor if you would choose 3rd
Floor Nelson as your November Community of the Month because I believe that
this floor has really shown that.

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Lyndsay Sundeen
  Address: 951 Nelson Hall
  Nominee Email: sunnydee17@hotmail.com
     Nominated By: Gibson Holm
     Date Submitted: 10/22/2002 1:48:56 PM
Reason: Lyndsay spreads laughter and positivity all day everyday. She makes everyone feel important to the community.

Of the Month Award: Community
  Nominee: 3rd S. Snarr
  Address:
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Randy Hochstatter
     Date Submitted: 10/23/2002 12:17:46 PM
Reason: There are many reasons that 3rd S. Snarr should be selected as Community of the Month for the month of October. When RA's do rounds on 3. SS they spend a lot of time talking to the people on that floor. 3rd SS is a very social floor. RA, Amy Rosengren, has done a wonderful job at establishing a great sense of community on her floor. One night, I got called to 3rd SS to flip a breaker for a room. Well.. that task itself only took about 30 seconds. I spent the next hour up on the floor meeting practically half of the floor. They just kept introducing me to more people. I don't know what y'all think about that, but that is an ideal community in my eyes. They made me feel welcome. Also, one night, I witnessed the floor putting together approx. $500 to bail a couple of the guys on the floor out of jail. I am not saying that being in jail is good... well... DUH, but I am saying that their concern for their floormates is what attracted me. I know that you will have no regrets about naming 3 SS as community of the month and I am confident in nominating them for Community of the month. Please choose 3rd South Snarr.... they deserve it.

She has an amazing personality that does not go unnoticed. She has taken on a lot of responsibilty with Halloween. She is determined to make it a success. I believe her strive for success makes her an excellent candidate for executive board member of the month!

     Nominated By: Amy
     Date Submitted: 10/24/2002 1:25:51 PM
Reason: Bernard has been an excellent addition to the staff at Kise! He fits in remarkably. I have noticed his strive to connect with the students at MSUM, he is very friendly and always smiling. He seems to go out of his way to talk to people and I think that is awesome! I hope everyone else has seen the amazing job Bernard is doing and that he can be recognized as Spotlight of the month

  Nominee Email: grrsteph@yahoo.com
     Nominated By: HOROSCOPE BUDDY
     Date Submitted: 10/24/2002 1:31:30 PM
Reason: I have noticed Stephie G's works on her floor, she is doing an excellent job, and I feel she needs to be recognized. She has had a lot of responsibility now that her fellow RA on 4th is no longer there. It is a challenge that she has shown amazing composure. I am so proud of the awesome job she is doing, and I wanted her to know that!!

  Nominee: Your Mom
  Address: Snarr Front Desk
Nominee Email: Do you really think a vacuum has an email address? COME ON!
Nominated By: Snarr Staff (except Dan)
     Date Submitted: 10/28/2002 11:07:32 PM
Reason: We, the Snarr Staff, feel that Your Mom needs to be recognized for all of the wonderful things that she does. This is why we are nominating her for Spotlight of the Month. Your Mom is the epitome of the fish philosophy. She always "makes our resident's days" by just "being there for them when they need her the most." Even though she sucks, she chooses to put the residents first, hence "choosing her attitude." And finally, she definetely "plays" with the Snarr Staff...use your imagination on that one. By submiting this nomination, we thought we would add a little fun to the meeting and hopefully brighten someone's day! We love you.....AND YOUR MOM!!!! :)

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Ashley Sneider
  Address: 358 Nelson
  Nominee Email:
Nominated By: Ashleigh Anderson & Jennifer Halverson
     Date Submitted: 10/29/2002 4:23:36 PM
Reason: We would like to nominate Ashley because she is a dedicated friend and resident on our floor. Ashley spends countless hours each week participating in Hall Olympics, Hall Council, Homecoming Committee, Delta Zeta, CAB, Conduct Committee and other organizations. She is dedicated to our community and repsects every individual on the floor. Ashley works hard at her classes and balances time between school and friends. She is an amazing individual and our floor wouldn't be complete without her energy, creativity, and incredible support.

Of the Month Award: ResidentAssistant
  Nominee: JO STANGE
  Address: 208 E Grantham
  Nominee Email: ra_hojo@hotmail.com
     Nominated By: Stephanie
     Date Submitted: 10/29/2002 8:44:36 PM
Reason: Today, Jo took one of her gals to the hospital. What an awesome woman. Her resident had a gland burst while she was eating and she came to Jo for help because she is such a helpful person and would drop whatever she is doing to help someone out. JO rocks my socks off!

Of the Month Award: program
  Nominee: NGH Hall Council
  Address:
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Amanda Snyder
     Date Submitted: 10/30/2002 9:27:01 PM
Reason: NGH Hall Council put on the
"Trick-or-Treating" for canned
goods program. They went
"Trick-or-Treating" just around NGH,
but they got over 200 items and
donated them to the Dorothy Day House.

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Brooke Zarling
  Address: 182 Snarr East
  Nominee Email: gigglebuggs@aol.com
     Nominated By: Lizzi Heal
     Date Submitted: 10/31/2002 4:12:24 PM
Reason: Brooke is an incredible asset to the Snarr complex and to 1st East Snarr. She is the secretary of Hall Council. However, she goes above and beyond the call of duty by doing little things like decorating for Halloween the night before all by herself and volunteering to do all the little things that no one else wants to do. She was more than willing to allow her room to be a "cool room" and to go around and have her picture be taken in other people's rooms as a model.

No one on our floor can stop by and say "Hi" to Brooke without being cheered up. She always has something funny to say or some crazy idea, and trust me, she has some crazy ideas! Whether it involve hide-and-go-seek in the lounge, a white trash party or filming a video a contest to see who can fit the most tootsie rolls in their mouth, she never turns down an opportunity to have some good clean fun.

Brooke has helped me out throughout the year with my job as RA. I have been able to rely on her experiences as an supperclassman and her experiences living here on 1st East Snarr last year. She has also volunteered to plan a program for me (dressing up crazy and going to teenie-bopper night at the roller rink), and put some nice decorations up in the lounge.

I can honestly say that our floor would not be the same without Brooke Zarling. She adds a positive energy, humor, and crazy accents like no one else I know. It's been an honor to have her as a part of our community.

Of the Month Award: spotlight
  Nominee: Don Nicklay
  Address:
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Amanda Ziegler
     Date Submitted: 11/2/2002 10:40:46 PM
Reason: Don Nicklay is the General Maintenence worker in Holmquist Hall. Having been employed at MSUM for over 20 years, he has seen almost everything in the residence halls. Every morning we walk into a bathroom that is sparkling clean and smelling fresh. This past month, Don has really come through for us on 2nd West Holmquist going above and beyond his expected line of duty. He unclogged our sink as well as took care of a clogged shower by calling in a work order himself. He has always maintained a very clean environment on our floor that has made our community safe and enjoyable. Every time I see Don, he always asks me how I'm doing and we usually chat about current events especially sports. Don not only excels at his profession but also sincerely cares about the residents on the floor. Overall, he is a very caring man and a dedicated employee.

Of the Month Award: spotlight
  Nominee: Melissa Iverson
  Address: 232 South Snarr
  Nominee Email: iversope@mnstate.edu
     Nominated By: Sarah Kulseth
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 3:17:34 AM
Reason: This recognition for Mel has been a long time in coming. She truly deserves this award every month for all of the things she does. She never ceases to amaze me each day with her dedication to her job, school, friends, and staff. She is always willing to listen to anyone about anything no matter what is going on with her. She puts everyone ahead of herself. Mel can best be described as the Energizer Bunny. She just keeps going and going and going. She never seems to stop. She's always running off to class, a meeting, another meeting, her internship, or something else, but she always takes time to stop and talk to people to see how they're doing and what's going on with them. She is so kind-hearted and full of life, which everyone around her is aware of if they here her laugh or see her shining face. She can brighten anyone's day just by entering a room. She truly does follow out the fish philosophy. She always knows how to "play" with everyone. She constantly "chooses her attitude" by smiling and being full of life. She always knows how to "be there" for everyone that needs her, either by helping figure something out or by just being there to listen. Finally, she "makes everyone's day" by just being the awesome person that she is. This, and many more reasons, is why I think that Mel deserves "Spotlight of the Month" for October.

Of the Month Award: ExecutiveBoardMember
  Nominee: Brooke Zarling
  Address: 182 SE
  Nominee Email: gigglebuggs@aol.com
     Nominated By: Mel Iverson
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 8:16:15 AM
Reason: Brooke is the Secretary of Snarr Hall Council. She does an outstanding job weekly, but I am specifically nominating her for her involvement with the Halloween festivities. Brooke, being the only one who worked with hall council last year, took all of the Halloween preparations upon herself. She headed the Halloween committee and made sure that each game was taken care of, she arranged with other exec member coverage for all of these games as well. Starting Monday, Brooke began decorating and finalizing all details and spent many extra hours this past week with Halloween with little help from the remaining exec board. I can honestly say, that I don’t know what I would have done as an advisor without her help for Halloween, or without her weekly. The amazing thing is that Brooke does this with many different things on her plate. She coaches skating and serves as a exec at PRSSA. I highly recommend that Brooke get Executive Board Member of the month.

Of the Month Award: program
  Nominee: Dan Sandberg
  Address: 458 SS
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Mel Iverson
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 8:18:22 AM
Reason: Social/Rec Program

I am nominating Dan’s Madden Football Tournament for social program of the month because it was a well thought out program with good attendance and participants really had a good time. This tournament started as an idea from his floor, and with help from them, Dan created Madden Tournament 2002. There were at least 16 participants each contributing to the prize fund. This program also included people that didn’t live on 4th South Snarr. The program spanned a couple of weeks while residents battled for first place. The really awesome thing was hearing residents of Dan’s floor talk about the program and how much fun it was or talk about there strategy during Lunch or walking down the hall. That shows me, that this program was a success and should be nominated for Program of the Month.

Of the Month Award: program
  Nominee: Lizzi and Troy
Address: 268 SE and 258 SS
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Mel Iverson
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 8:20:03 AM
Reason: Educational

Lizzi and Troy used an awesome resource on campus to bring the program Tattoos and Body Piercing to the residents of Snarr Hall. Lizzi and Troy started planning the program for just their floors but the interest from all the other RA’s encouraged them to put the program on for the entire complex. After setting up the speakers from Hendrix Health Center, Lizzi and Troy did a great job advertising for the program, which worked because they had over 30 attend the program. Hendrix did a great job of presenting and the residents shared stories and tattoo’s during the program. I think this should be program of the month because even though Hendrix presented the program, Troy and Lizzi took it to the next level with advertising and giving residents the opportunity to learn and share their experiences.

Of the Month Award: ResidentAssistant
  Nominee: Lizzi Heal
  Address: 268 SE
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Mel Iverson
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 8:21:27 AM
Reason: Lizzi Heal is the RA on 1st Snarr East and has helped with the creation of an amazing community. Her floor, largely because of her continued involvement and caring attitude, is awesome. There is always a buzz on her floor, you can’t walk through the floor without talking to 5 or 6 people. All of the girls hang out personally as well as on the floor and they adore Lizzi’s positive attitude and smiles. Lizzi has created this atmosphere because of her outstanding programming efforts, availability and the fact that her girls respect and admire her. Lizzi also has this affect on her staff. She is one of the main driving forces on the staff when it comes to positive attitudes and smiles. She has helped with the bonding of staff with many inside jokes, brightened up days with her “your Mom” jokes, her contagious laughter, and her willingness to help anyone and everyone. She is one of the best I seen in three years in the position and highly recommend that she receive this award.

Of the Month Award: ExecutiveBoardMember
  Nominee: Tiffany Meier
  Address: 570 Nelson
  Nominee Email: tiffany_meier@hotmail.com
     Nominated By: Nina Tupy
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 10:36:02 AM
Reason: Last spring when NGH Hall Council was doing their nominations and elections for the Fall 2002 executive board, the hall council nominated Tiffany Meier for president. Though she was unsure of her ability to do the job, she hesitantly accepted the position and I can’t tell you how glad I am that she did. Tiffany has been there for our hall council through everything. She has diligently worked to make our hall council organized, fun, and productive. She constantly has the students involved in her hall council in mind in that she keeps both our weekly and executive board meetings running smoothly and efficiently. She is an excellent leader keeping our large executive board and our over 30 regular member in order during meetings. She is a detail-oriented person constantly making sure that she has all the information she needs and she always follows up on the things she says she will do. Some of the special things she has done have been: going out of her way making large signs for special events, planning and executing our opening ice cream social, recognizing her executive board members with special Halloween treats, and serving on the community service committee where they planned a “Trick or Can” program that got over 200 items for the Dorothy Day Food Pantry. Tiffany is friendly, personable, and willing to go above and beyond her call as president. She serves the students of Nelson Grantham Holmquist in an outstanding way. I am proud to have her on my executive board and would love to see her recognized for her efforts.

Of the Month Award: ExecutiveBoardMember
  Nominee: Brooke Zarling
  Address: 182 SE
  Nominee Email: Gigglebuggs@aol.com
     Nominated By: justin vasvick
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 12:54:30 PM
Reason: Brooke Zarling has been an asset to the Snarr Hall Council Staff. In the past few weeks she has been involved. Besides being secretary at every meeting, she has been the halloween committee chair. Brooke helped to organize all the games in Snarr and get the prizes and people lined up to work and hand out candy to the little kids. All the events and meetings Brooke has helped with and been at have helped her go above the position as secretary at hall council. She has been very dedicated to her position and helping others when no one else would. Brooke is an excellent candidate for Exec board member of the month.

Of the Month Award: program
  Nominee: Carl Johnson
  Address: Grantham
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 11/3/2002 2:05:11 PM
Reason: I am nominating Carl's "Guy's Night Out" program for social program of the month. Carl organized a guy's night out on Friday, October 18 that included going to Buffalo Wild Wings, bowling, and a concert. Carl went above in beyond in several ways to coordinate this program. His advertising was carried out well, initially with a "teaser" ad that didn't have much information, just to get people talking about "Guy's Night Out." He did this by putting a note on the doors of each of his resident's and also the male residents of 4th GN. Then he continued to spread the word through word of mouth. People were curious about what the program was going to be all about. Then at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 12 male residents met in the lounge to find out what the night had in store for them. Carl's efforts to go above and beyond just hanging up one poster is commendable. Carl put a lot of work into the program also by calling around to find the best deals to make the program very affordable. He got Wild Wings to agree to give 10% off the bill, used the bowling coupons from the Campus Coupons book for free bowling, and organized the guy's night out around the free concert that was held in the GN lounge. The end result a great floor program with 12 male residents attending on a Friday night. This is truly amazing, and more efforts should be made to provide programming options on weekend nights so residents don't feel as though the only option is to drink.

Reason: Our floor as a whole is the most family like amongst the entire college. We often have a group of 10-15 people going to lunch together. We are always helping each other with our problems, whether it be homework, relationships, arguments with your roommate, or whatever. Our floor is actually more like a 40 bedroom apartment. It truly is a home.

     Date Submitted: 11/8/2002 9:08:10 AM
Reason: The residence hall life on MSUM is one of a family environment. Everyone is a friend. If it weren't for the large amounts of people you would know everyone by name. There is always at least casual hello's as you pass in the hallways. I am sure many people will make lifelong friends from the residence halls this school year. This campus has the highest community feeling in the nation. The halls are just multi bedroom apartments with everyone being a roommate.

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Katie "Carson" Taplin
  Address: Nelson #560
  Nominee Email: dancin_diva_02@yahoo.com
     Nominated By: Jiggy Trapp
     Date Submitted: 11/11/2002 11:59:04 AM
Reason: Carson has really shown that she cares about the community she lives in, and is proud to show it. She has participated in floor programs, as well as helped planned a couple of them. She is AWESOME when it comes to following policies, she has never tried to bend them in any way shape or form. She helped decorate the floor for Halloween, she put up fun reading material in the bathroom, and she's always there for people, whether they need their hair done, a ride to the doctor, or just to talk. She has proved herself to be an EXCELLENT role model through personality as well as her actions.

  Nominee: Mackenzie Taylor
  Address: 756 Nelson
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Nalatie Janssen
     Date Submitted: 11/17/2002 9:08:51 PM
Reason: Mackenzie deserves to be the student of the month because she is an exceptional resident. She gets along with everyone on the floor and makes a point to get to know them, is very active in hall olympics as one of our floor ambassadors, and is always willing to help out in some way, whether it be assisting me with a decorating project, another resident with homework, or just as someone that's there to listen.

Of the Month Award: spotlight
  Nominee: Kim Brosdahl
  Address: 120 Ballard Hall
  Nominee Email: brosdhlk@mnstate.edu
     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 11/28/2002 10:54:36 PM
Reason: Recently Kim Brosdahl went above and beyond to make a difference. In preparation for the Tri-College Housing Conference on Saturday, November 23, I forgot to pick up the computer projection units needed before the computer center closed on Friday the day before the conference. I realized this late Friday night. Knowing that Kim's partner works in the computer center I thought I would call her in the morning to see if she could help me out. She was planning to attend the conference that day, but she sacrificed and came in much earlier to not just help me get the computer projection units, but also to help with setting up for the conference. Kim really helped to save the day, without the projection units many of the presenters would not have been able to share their information to conference attendees.

  Nominee: Laura Molden
  Address: 361 Nelson Hall
  Nominee Email: 1mm_cheer_84@yahoo.com
     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 11/28/2002 11:09:31 PM
Reason: Laura Molden went above and beyond to carry out the campaign for the change in visitation policy for Nelson and Grantham. Laura stepped up and has taken charge of the committee after the original leader showed diminished interest. She reviewed the survey results, led committee discussions during Hall Council, scheduled and reserved space for an open forum in the CMU, made and sent out invitations to administration, and facilitated discussion at the open forum. Her facilitation was particularly impressive, she was calm, clear, and facilitated it better than many other open forums I have attended. She also worked with the committee to do an incredible amount of publicity for the open forum (mailbox stuffers, posters, window paint). The attendance was impressive (about 20 residents, the entire Student Senate, and the director of housing) for an open forum at 6 p.m. on a Thursday. She took notes and is now planning to meet with the director of housing to discuss the issues related to the policy. Laura has demonstrated exceptionally leadership and deserves recognition!

     Nominated By: RAmy
     Date Submitted: 11/29/2002 2:30:13 PM
Reason: I am nominating 3rd Snarr South for community of the month because we truly are a "Pretty Awesome Community." I have had numerous instances where I felt my floor was a small family. We are always watching out for each other. There was a serious situation on the floor, and the way the other residents worried about the one that was having difficulties was truly amazing, there was genuine concern and I don't know how often that happens. When I was putting up my new door decs, I walked out my door, and soon there were 5 of my residents walking along the floor with me to help hang the new decorations up.(this was at 12:30am.) The floor is also very protective of their stuff, they are not afraid to approach each other on noise or cleanliness, and I think that takes real community!! I hope each of you can realize the cohesiveness of our awesome floor!! Also, if you get a chance please come visit 3rd South, WE LOVE VISITORS!!\

Reason: Sarah has been doing a great job with her not so social floor. She is usually walking up and down the hallways talking to the few residents with their doors open. If Sarah is home, you will find her door open. She is trying hard to do programming and get her floor involved, but I think because there is not much floor participation she does not get recognized as much as she should. She goes out of her way for her residents, and is doing a great job, and I think she should be Resident Assistant of the Month!

Reason: Steve is valuable to the community of 3rd Snarr South. He is very outgoing and is always walking around or hanging out in the lounge talking to anyone who happens to pass. He is also very eager to help me if I need anything, he made a poster for the floor because he thought "the wall needed something." He is very much involved in the theater department here at MSUM, which takes a lot of time. He goes out of his way to make his fellow residents laugh. I am glad to have Steve on my floor, and I believe has been doing a great job of building community on the floor, and getting to know his floor mates.

Reason: Mel is doing a great job as the advisor of Snarr Hall Council. She is always trying to think of fun new ways to increase attendance. She came up with "Lightning Strikes, Ice Cream Bites," which was kind of successful. She also does a good job of keeping the Exec. Board focused and motivated to better Snarr Hall. She does so much and balances so well, I think she deserved to be recongnized for her hard work with Snarr Hall Council.

Reason: I have the privledge of being Papo's "sister-RA." This has been a blessing, because I know that if ever there is an area where I am lacking as an RA, chances are Raul will make up for it. He has proven himself to be an amazing RA and knows every guy on his side of the floor, along with every gal on my side. This is awesome for me, because I know that if there is a resident I am not connecting with, chances are he is!

Papo has had some of the craziest spontaneous programs. One night he went outside and played "sardines" with our residents until the early morning hours! Other times he just ends up hanging out in the lounge talking all night.

It has been fun to work with Papo this year, because it has enabled us to have one community with two different "floors." He is continually getting his guys over to see my gals (I'm not sure if there are alternative motives there. . .)and actively promotes attendance at our joint programs.

Papo knows each of his resients on a very individual basis. If they are dating someone, he knows that person's name. For their birthdays, Papo tries to do an individualized thing for each of his residents, whether it be duct tape pants or a dying giaraffe.

Most importantly, Papo cares for his floor and takes pride in them. When one of his residents starred in "1776," he encouraged the others to go. I know that all of his residents (and mine, too) know they can turn to him at any time.

Reason: I have been on staff with Dan for almost one full semester, and i feel that he should get the recognition he deserves. Dan has done an excellent job as an RA, and an excellent job of building up his floor as a community. Dan has doen a wonderful job of getting his floor together for numerous activities, as well as really becoming their friend, and someone they trust and respect. Dan has had to deal with a lot of situations on his floor, and with his positive attitude, he has prevailed through all of them. Dan's biggest issue on his floor is homo-phobia. Dan has done an excellent job of stressing the importance of open mindness, and has convinced a number of peoplke on his floor to attend the next safe zone training. Dan just has helped me out tonight. It is 3:00 in th emorning on 12/7/02. I called Dan to help me out with a problem on my floor, and he did not even hesitate, he responded. Dan is a great friend as most people on staff know, but I feel he is also a great RA who is overlooked sometimes because he does not verbalize what he is doing on his floor like some people do. Dan handles things in a way that is personal, so I feel that he is overlooked sometimes. He has had a lot to deal with lately, adn I see that he is frustrated, adn feels like he is being overlooked. I think this award is timely, as well as well deserved by Dan. I want to end by saying that Dan is an excellent RA, and you can ask anyone on Snarr staff, and they will tell you what a great part of our staff he is, and I feel that everyone would agree with the statement, " I can't picture what staff would be like if Dan weren't on it." He is doing an excellent job and needs to be recognized.

Reason: Alida always shows up to the hall council meetings with a smile and comes not only wanting to be there, but happy to be there. Alida has been an active member in our hall council in Snarr Hall. The reason that I am nominating Alida (take it or leave it) is because she stepped up and delivered (led) a hall council meeting when our President decided not to show up one night. It was completely on the spot and Alida handled the pressure being cool as ice. This is all I got!

Reason: I know that there has been a lot of hostile tensions building up about the Snarr representation on MSUM's chapter of NRHH, but I feel this award is long past due.

By stating the things that I state in this nomination, I am not saying the other RA staffs on this campus are not doing the things the RAs are doing in Snarr. I am simply saying that what is being done deserves some recognition.

As a complex coordinator, one of my duties is to step in and mediate when conflict arises on staff. When arguments arise, it is my task to help resolve them. One would think this might happen a lot on a small staff as we work together. I can say that we haven't had this happen. It surprises me. I look at the dynamics of our staff and we are by no means perfect, but we are all working toward a common goal, and the whole time, we realize that we are only as strong as our weekest link.

Our staff meetings are not only productive, but we take the time to laugh. One of the most improtant aspects of our meeting is ups and downs; not just to vent, but to see how everyone is doing.

Programs are welll up to par. Not just programs, but many quality programs of which I have had the experience of attending.

The staff that I am a part of has gone through a lot this semester. There have been health concerns, deaths of loved ones, and just some hard personal conflicts. Not once, not one single time did any of these issues get over looked.

As an advisor of this group of RAs, I had the experience of seeing each of them well up with tears at our staff retreat, as they each read aloud portions of letters sent to them by their parents. Their parents wrote about how proud they were of each of them for tackling and managing the task put before them as RAs. Not only are their parents proud of them, but I am EXTREMELY proud of them and MSUM's chapter of NRHH should be proud to give this award to such a deserving group.

     Date Submitted: 12/7/2002 6:56:39 PM
Reason: Type of Program: Educational/Social
Title of Program: Mocktails

Reason: Jessykah and Raul did a great job with this program. They used money from Hall Council to buy ingredients for alcohol-free cocktails, "mocktails." They set the 1st East Lounge up as a bar, bringing in different lighting and putting music on. They also put educational information on the walls about alcohol.

The kitchen area was the bar, where the RAs in East Snarr were "bartenders," mixing drinks for the residents. A variety of drinks were served: Dacquiris, Pina Coladas, Margaritas, and others.

The atmosphere was fun and loud, and the residents really enjoyed the program. About 60 people stopped by for drinks, and many stayed and socialized. One person was in charge of dropping Skittles in drinks, demonstrating how easily drugs can be slipped in drinks at parties.

Overall, the program was an incredible success! It was intended for all of East Snarr, but residents from all over showed up. This was a great program that allowed the residents to drink on campus - and learn about drinking!!!

Reason: Since the beginning of the year, Rachel has been there for her residents. She has always kept us informed of events going on around campus and things we need to know about changing policies, things we need to know about, etc. She has always been straightforward with us about residence hall rules and regulations; she understands we may not like them, but explains that they are in effect for the good of everyone. She shares her on-duty experiences (keeping the privacy of others intact) and uses them as examples of how and why we should co-operate with RA's. She has told her residents that she will be there for them- no matter what time day or night- and she has. She puts so much time and effort into making our floor a better environment both through her cute and festive decorations and talking to residents about concerns they have no matter how small. She is very supportive of ideas her residents have and of ways they can contribute to the floor as well. Rachel not only helps out her residents, she also helps out her co-RA'. This past month, she has been here on the weekends and weeknights covering a couple of on-duty shifts her co-RA's needed off. Comparing her to my RA last year, I can clearly see that Rachel is going above and beyond the call of duty, devoting a lot of her spare time to improving the floor. As you can see Rachel is not only a great RA, but a great person as well!

Reason: Gina is amazing! Without her, I honestly don't know what I would do. She has been a HUGE help to not only me personally, but the entire 3rd South Dahl community. First of all, back in October when floor evaluations were handed out, I asked for a volunteer to collect them. Right away, Gina's hand shot up. She kept count of how many evaluations were in and made sure there were enough so the entire floor didn't have to re-do them. The most recent contribution Gina has made to the 3rd South Dahl community is the ordering our floor sweatpants. If you've ever gone through this process, you can understand what she's been going through. First of all, everyone needed to put their order in. She went above and beyond to go to Sportland to pick up "sample sizes" so everyone knew which size to order. Next, she helped me collect all the money. She's also been dealing with Sportland and trying to figure out when they are ACTUALLY going to be in. This has been an ongoing hassle for almost four weeks now! She has been incredible. Finally, the sweatpants are supposed to be in on Monday, so she is going to pick them up for me. I know I can count on her to help me distribute them as well. Without Gina, I probably never would have gotten around to the floor sweatpants. It was on my list of things to do, but I honestly didn't have the time. Thanks to her, the floor will have their sweatpants soon (hopefully) and we can all express our pride in our floor by wearing them. Once again, I want to say, "Thank you Gina. This would not have been possible without you!" Gina is certainly an excellent resident and I believe she needs to be recognized for her ongoing efforts.

Reason: Alida has been doing an awesome job this year as Snarr Hall Council's Vice President, as well as being a member of RHA. She has contributed so much to Snarr, by taking on so many different tasks. One huge task that I know of personally is before the MACURH conference. She took on a lot of responsibilities without a second thought. She did everything so well and on-time. Even though everything was time consuming, she didn't complain at all. She really stepped up to when everyone needed her. She has been doing an awesome job so far this year, and I know that it will continue. This is why I feel Alida deserves Exec. Board member of the month.

Reason: Michael Wilde is an AWESOME advisor and I don't think he gets recognized enough for his outstanding efforts. I honestly don't know where to begin. I've been working for Michael since Spring semester of last year. No matter what, he has ALWAYS been there for me. I know that I can count on him for anything. I never hesitate to contact him if I have a question. Whether it's a phone call at two o'clock in the morning, or a massive e-mail listing several concerns, he responds immediately, and with great advice. Michael has helped me get through many difficult situations. He is a wonderful listener and always seems to have the right thing to say. He has even cancelled appointments just so I could talk to him about some of the stressful incidents I've dealt with. Michael tends to bring out the "kid" in everyone. He is very playful and always seems to be upbeat. I know he has truly helped me to become a better person. There is so much more to say about Michael, but there is no way that I can list it all here. He goes above and beyond what he is asked to do and I believe he deserves some recognition.

Reason: It would be tough for me to describe in just a few words how impressed I am with the work that Gabe has done in the last month. Even though Gabe was only hired in early November, I feel as though he has been part of our staff from the beginning. Before Gabe was even hired, he was up on 4W Grantham introducing himself, getting to know the residents, and learning from his co-4th RA Stephy G. Since he was hired he has impacted the floor in such a positive way. I have seen Gabe at least a dozen times at Kise eating with his residents. He spends a great deal of time on the floor, going door to door getting to know each resident. Though he has only been with them a month, his residents feel comfortable coming to him with their problems. Gabe has even dealt with a suicidal resident in the past month. With little experience under his belt, Gabe dealt with the situation perfectly. Now when I walk onto 4th Floor Grantham I see a positive community with open doors and residents who are happy and involved-it has completely changed its reputation as "trouble floor". Gabe has also involved himself with our staff. He has planned a staff activity, painted the Holmquist desk with Ryan VanGuilder, and taken on a great deal of break duty. Gabe has volunteered to go on more rounds in the last month than probably most of staff has this entire year. I am very proud of what Gabe has done in his short month as the 4W Grantham RA and he should be too. Please honor him with this award.

Reason: EDUCATIONAL. I am nominating 3rd Nelson's "Yee-haw" (Roping) program for educational floor program of the month because I thought that the program was unique and interesting. One of Heather's residents Laura Molden helped her put on the program by demonstrating how to rope. Getting residents involved with programming is a great way to help them gain experience and to keep them interested and involved with programming, so I think Heather did a great job of using the talents of one of her residents. Heather made official "Cowgirl" certificates for the residents who came to the program making it something special and memorable. Great job!

Reason: No one has worked harder for this award than Laura Molden. Laura is currently the chair of NGH Hall Council's 24-hour visitation committee. Laura has been involved since the beginning and is one of the few residents who has stuck with it all the way through-even taking over after our last chair left his position. In the last month, Laura has lead committee meetings, compiled the results of our online survey, planned an open forum to discuss the policy, and met with Beth Conner to discuss the outcome of her work. I have watched Laura's leadership and dedication to her cause grow a great deal over the last month. She has tirelessly worked keep residents involved and keep the policy moving forward. I am very impressed with the work she has done and want her to feel rewarded for all she's done. Though I am confident that this policy is still what our residents want, I can guarantee that the policy wouldn't be going anywhere without Laura's help. Thank you, Laura for all the work you've done. If every resident of Nelson and Grantham knew all she were doing, I am sure they would be equally thankful.

Reason: Every day when I come home to my room on 3rd West Grantham I see that doors are open and people are happy to be living there. So many of the women on the floor consider the floor home and take pride in where they live. They are supportive of each other and actively try to keep everyone involved. This is evident as they stand in third place in the hall olympics. You will often find residents of the floor up late chatting in the lounge or hanging out in each other's rooms playing games, watching movies, or playing nintendo. There is always activity on the floor. The floor has dealt with several difficult floor issues-such as having their decorated lounge vandalized-in a positive way by redecorating or having floor meetings to communicate openly about other floor issues that have arisen. This is my fourth year living on campus and I have never been a part of a community that is as welcoming as 3rd West Grantham. Even though I am probably one of the least active members of the community because of my crazy schedule, I still feel like a member of the community and feel like people have gone out of their way to get to know me. I am happy to call the floor home and would love to see them awarded for their efforts.

Reason: Dan is an outstanding Resident Assistant, staff member, and friend. He is an RA on a floor with both men and woman, who constantly challange him and each other. Programming for a coed floor with residents of all different ages and interests can be difficult, but Dan finds ways to include and satisfy every member of the community. His programs are fun, creative, and complex, often keeping residents involved for weeks at a time.
Dan hangs out with his residents daily in their lounge, where they play games, listen to music and chat for hours every week. He handles conflicts with his residents with respect and maturity and urges them to do the same. He is a great listener and offers rational thinking to situations where people are often being irrational. One of his greatest strengths is his awesome communication skills which help him communicate clearly and effectivly to everyone on the floor and reach them on a very personal level. He has even helped me and my residents on 3rd Nelson, when conflicts have come up and because of his help there, many of my residents consider him a friend.
Dan is an amazing staff member offering support, enthusiasm and humor in everything he does. Many evenings you will find Dan on rounds with a fellow staff members, and residents from all over the Snarr complex know him.

Reason: You know those days where you just feel like everything is wrong and all you want to do is just crawl into bed and cry your heart out. Those days where every person around you seems exceptionally happy and so you try hard to hide your sadness and frustration so as to not bring them down. And it usually works, many times no one notices what a bad day you are having, but then you always run into Mel Iverson.

Mel is the person who notices everything and everyone and tries her best to fix whats upside down with the world. Reason: I have known Ava-Gaye from the day I arrived at campus, which was about a week before the semester started. She has done her best to make me feel comfortable. When I arrived really late at night there were no doordecs for me, but within an hour there were door decs and sweets to welcome me. Ava-Gaye has excelled last semester in her programming and our floor was number one when GPA and wrote-ups are concerned. I strongly believe this is so because Ava-Gaye has created an atmosphere of trust and companionship on the floor. Ava-Gaye is well awarer that many of the residents on our floor are transfer students and she tries to make us more comfortable by asking residents to come to Kise or do other stuff together. Ava-Gaye pays attention to the small things that make you feel at home. Ava has managed to make floormeetings fun. At every meeting there would be the serious talk, but there also always would be a small game, just for the fun of itI moved out of Dahl because there are no single rooms in Dahl, but Ava-Gaye still treats me as part of the 1-st South Dahl community. She invited me for the floormeeting and the progressive snack afterwards. . She told me that being a member of a community on campus does not stop when someone moves out.I believe that Ava-Gaye does an incredible job. I feel that 1st S. Reason: Holly is one of those residents that every Resident Assistant dreams of having on their floor. She is enthustiatic about life and this comes across in everything that she does. Her enthusiasm is infectious, in the best way, on our floor.

Beyond being just a great resident, during this past week Holly selflessly helped another resident on the floor that was in great need . The other resident had gotten hurt early in the morning and was all alone in lots of pain, until Holly came to her assitance by bringing her to the hospital and staying by her side the entire time. Holly even volunteered to bring this resident home to be with her family and that was a 3 hour drive, one way.

Holly is great to have on my floor every day, but in times of need she really puts a 100% forward!

     Nominated By: Chad Heimer
     Date Submitted: 1/27/2003 5:04:16 PM
Reason: Jessica Corbet is always their to put a smile on anyones face, I love this girl. She is completely and all encompasingly cool. She is always working hard to get things done, and she always looks at the up on the downs. She is a very optomistic person looking at the good in the bad, and always bringing a smile accross the way. She rocks, that is the bottom line.

Nominated By: Chad and Jessica Corvet
     Date Submitted: 1/27/2003 5:12:33 PM
Reason: Cory went above and beyond the call of duty for a student. This is his first semester on 2 East Holmquist, and he has shown to be a motivated student that wants the best for his hall. Recently Cory cleaned up the whole Holmquist weight room. Their where weights all over the place and crap lying in the corners, but Cory cleaned it all up out of the goodness of his personal character. He is the man this month. Holmquist can now sleep in peace because our weight room is cleaned, thanks Cory.

  Nominee: Jennifer GMW
  Address: West Snarr
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Christina Werk
     Date Submitted: 1/28/2003 7:08:40 PM
Reason: Jennifer is the female GMW from West Snarr and she does an incredible job. I usually have my door open during her cleaning hours and she always makes a point to stop by and say HI! She does a phenomenal cleaning job and is a friend to everyone on the floor. She will even go as far as letting you know when a pot of food is boiling over on the stove. She keeps her closet tidy and she is always smiling. Her conversations are brief while she is busy working, but there is always a conversation. I can't imagine a better GMW.

Of the Month Award: student
  Nominee: Sam Rovang
  Address: Snarr East 179
  Nominee Email: pugsleyrovang@aol.com
     Nominated By: Lizzi Heal
     Date Submitted: 1/30/2003 11:16:56 AM
Reason: Sam Rovang is an amazing part of our floor on 1st East Snarr! Since the beginning of the year, he has made a point to know every name of every man and woman on both sides of the floor, and has gotten to know almost everyone. Sam "goes on rounds" around the floor, just greeting everyone and making our days.

Also, he schedules his own spontaneous programs. Whether it be bringing a group to Big Top Bingo, or just going out with a group of friends, Sam always keeps our lives interesting.

I would recommend Sam to be Student of the Month because he is an extremely valuable part of our floor community. We would not be the same floor without him: and I'm glad he lives with us!

  Address: Dahl 219
  Nominee Email:
     Nominated By: Sarah Hanson
     Date Submitted: 1/30/2003 2:40:42 PM
Reason: We recently lost our two floor representatives, and when I asked at our last floor meeting who would be willing to represent our floor, Sara was the only one who volunteered. I felt that she should be recognized because she is always willing to help out on the floor.

  Nominee Email: squasha_g@hotmail.com
     Nominated By: Sarah Hanson
     Date Submitted: 1/30/2003 2:44:40 PM
Reason: Everytime I walk over to Natasha's floor she is always doing something with her residents, whether it is playing games in the lounge or visiting with them. She is alwys there for her residents when they need her and I feel that she is doing a great job.

  Nominee Email: katequilla@hotmail.com
     Nominated By: Jason Hesch
     Date Submitted: 2/4/2003 3:21:44 PM
Reason: I feel that this individual deserves this nomination because she is the hardest working person I know to do with Hall Councils. She has her hand and opinions in everything the exec board does and can handle many tasks along with keeping up with her schoolwork and her friends. She always has a positive attitude and makes everyone smile! This individual is a great person and I love working with her.

Of the Month Award: ResidentAssistant
  Nominee: Natalie Janssen
  Address: 766 Nelson
  Nominee Email: nat23j@yahoo.com
Nominated By: Angie, Mackenzie and Brina
     Date Submitted: 2/14/2003 11:18:22 PM
Reason: Natalie deserves to be resident assistant of the month because she is an awesome RA. She has managed to bring a floor of forty very different residents together creating a close nit community. Whether it is through floor functions or just hanging out she has connected with her residents as more than just a RA. While she keeps stance as and RA, she is a person to look up to, a person to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, but most of all she is a friend. No matter day or night her door is always open and she is there for all of us. I feel that Natalie has done a great job as a RA and should be recognized for the job that she has done.

  Nominee: Don Anderson
  Address: NL
  Nominee Email: andersdo@mnstate.edu
     Nominated By: Jo Stange
     Date Submitted: 2/16/2003 5:39:43 AM
Reason: I was about to put a work order in to have three lights fixed/changed in my bathroom (2EGN) and Don was walking past. I asked him when my GMW would be available to request the favor rather than putting a work order in and he offered right away to do it himself. He went and looked to see what all he needed and it was done within the next fifteen minutes. Not only were the lights fixed/changed but every light works and shines brightly now.

I also saw him outside one Thursday morning chipping at ice on an outside drain of Nelson. I'm pretty sure it isn't a GMW's job to do that kind of stuff. He wasn't wearing a coat either and it was quite chilly!!

Reason: He's open to new ideas and nice to everyone. Hes outgoing and hangs out with all floor members instead of only half of the floor members (unlike some RAs like Danelle).

He's very underrated and should be appreciated for the work and effort he puts into the community.

Reason: Jason is one of the coolest RA's ever, he is always willing to talk if you need to. If you are in a bind he tries his best to help you out. He doesn't care if you aren't on the floor he is very accepting, and openminded. He has a great sence of humor and can always make you laugh. He relates to the people on the floor on a friend level instead of a superior person level. He is very involved with all the activities that the people on his floor are into, he also looks good in a women's bathing suit.

Reason: Sometimes it's really hard to please everyone and have everyone like you. Especially when you're a "boss" or "authority" type figure to people. People don't always take into consideration that they to are people with feelings. With such a large staff to work with and maintain, I think Ryan has gone through a lot and has done a wonderful job reaching out to his staff. He does so much that a lot of people don't realize. He's always involved with a gajillion meetings a week, not to mention the RA meetings which he, Amanda Snyder and Nina Tupy organize. He's just such a busy guy, i can't imagine how he keeps up with himself. As I ramble on, i'd just like to say, Ryan deserves to be recognizied!

Reason: If I were to move into a community like 1st East Snarr during the second semester, I'd be intimidated. But not Aaron! No sirree, since moving on our floor he's become another fun addition. Aaron can usually be found with the other residents of the floor having fun, whether it be a game of "Cranium" in the sunken lounge, a fake birthday in the floor lounge, or just chillin' and talking with the other residents. He's very active in our floor and its activites and always has something positive to say. I know I appreciate him and what he adds to our community, and I think the rest of the floor does, too.

Reason: I feel that 2W deserves to be community of the month for February. The guys of 2W are always hanging out together. There are always a large group of them going to eat in Kise or Union City, and they are always joking round and talking to each other. I don't think I see a guy from 2W alone, I think they move in packs!! I do know that 2W is an awesome group of guys that really adds to our campus, and I think that they definately exemplify a strong community on our campus. I think it is time that they get recognized for their awesome bonds that they have formed over the semester.

Mel seems to find time to get everything done, and not only get it done, but get it done well. She does so much that goes unrecognized, but I think she should know how much her work is appreciated.

Three days later Brandon helped run a poorly planned program to which he had no connection or oblegation. He showed up an hour early to help set up, ran karaoke/DJ'd for 3 hours, and stuck around for clean up. The program would not have run if Brandon had not been there.

I know for my floor and all of Ballard that is, our floors/bathrooms would be the worst and unlivable. My guys thank him daily for all that he does.

  Address: Grier Hall

     Nominated By: Amanda Snyder
     Date Submitted: 4/3/2003 10:35:55 PM
Reason: Dr. Adler is a new professor here in
the SLHS department. When he came
here he jumped right in and decided
that we needed an advisor for our
chapter of NSSLHA (National Student
Speech Language Hearing Association),
because to my knowledge we have never
had one. On top of that, he is a
wonderful professor. He makes learning
fun. He always had stories to tell in
class to help us remember the
information and make the information
we were learning more realistic. He
also really knows how to relate to
his students and gets to know them
personally. He has written me several
letters of recommendation for grad
schools and scholarships. I don't
have him as a professor this semester,
but when I see him around the
department, he always takes time to
ask how my grad school search is going.
He makes me feel like a person and not
"just a student." He really is one of
the best professors I've seen in my
four years at MSUM, and this is why I
believe he deserves to be the
Spotlight of the Month.

Reason: Laura is the Visitation Chair for our
Hall Council. She has worked very
hard on that committee this year.
She has set up several meetings with
Beth Conner, made surveys, and done
a lot of advertising for it. She
worked with Beth and got a 24-hour
visitation trial period for Nelson/Grantham.
She has been in it for the long haul.
Also, she organized everthing for our
Hall Council shirts. She collected
money, ordered the shirts, and picked
them up. She is a great asset to our
Hall Council!

Reason: I am nominating Leslie because of her outstanding committment to the residence halls and her ability to brighten anyones day. Leslie has really proven to be a resident that goes above and beyond. Leslie is the treasurer for RHA, attends Hall Council regularly and is a very active resident on her floor. What prompted me do nominate Leslie was because of her thoughtfulness and ability to brighten my day. Leslie always makes a point to stop and say hi, making sure that she asks how everything is going. She always acknowledges those she know and sometimes she doesn't know on the campus side walk. Leslie really makes students feel as if the belong and are important to her. That is why I am nominating her for Snarr Student "Of the Month"

Reason: Alida is the vice president of Snarr Hall Council and is a great one at that. Alida's nomination for Exec. Board Member of the month is long overdue. Alida is an extremely active member of Hall Council and fills roles that aren't necessarily her own. Recently she has taken on the role of treasurer, fills in for the president often, and basically is anyones right hand women. She has taken on the majority of the programs that Snarr Hall Council provides, creates forms to make the meetings run smoother and just has an outstanding attitude about residential life and the council. Alida definately makes my role as advisor easier and she alway brightens up any meeting. I really believe that Alida should be recognized for her efforts.

Snarr Search was an event that talented residents, whether it musically, comically or phyically. Brandon organized sign up tables, prizes, sound people and a Emcee for the event. The program was amazing, I had only planned to stay for 45 minutes and was there for the entire thing. The program had about 70 people in attendance and was one of the best programs I have seen in my 4 years on campus. Brandon, undoubtly, deserves Social Program of the Month!

Knowing nothing about the machine, I was told that I would have no problem putting it together. They were wrong, and Brandon came over at the last minute and helped up put it together and take it down. He really helped up out and we wanted to recognize him.

These meetings have not always been quick, and never once did he make me feel that he needed to move on to something else. He has always mede me feel like he wanted to help me.

     Nominated By: Nina Tupy
     Date Submitted: 4/6/2003 2:44:55 PM
Reason: Isaac has really helped out our executive board and our hall council. With a former very busy facilities chair who often had to miss hall council meetings, Isaac helped to pick up the slack and took over as chair of our facilities committee. Since he became involved with our executive board, Isaac hasn't missed a meeting and brings lots of great ideas to the table. Isaac has been very active in making changes and meeting with Garry Erickson from the housing department each week. Each time he brings a concern to Garry, he pursues it until it is complete. One example of the things he has gotten changed is that all of the fire alarm pull stations on the first floors of Nelson and Grantham have been covered so that we wouldn't have as many false alarms as we did this fall. We haven't had a single one since the covers were put on!

Isaac is a model resident because he doesn't just complain about things that need to be fixed. Instead, he works hard to get them fixed. He is not only active on our hall council, but he is also active on his floor and in his entire community. Isaac is a positive person who is willing to stand out among his peers and get the job done!

Reason: I am nominating Mara because she is an exemplary individual. As a student, she attends Hall Council meetings and researched and planned her own hall program (which is taking place on May 6th). She is a very giving person, always sharing her cooking and inviting people over for tea. Additionally, Mara so appreciated the dedication of her professor that she spoke to President Barden about the wonderful job he was doing. She is a wonderful student, and it is fairly obvious that she also wants to help other students as well: she was selected to be a Resident Assistant in Snarr Hall next year. For all of her hard work and dedication this past month and year, Mara deserves to be NRHH's Student of the Month.

Reason: Hannah has been such an amazing asset for our floor. It would not be the same if she were not on it. She is constantly going from room to room to see what's going on. She's a great friend to, I would say, almost everyone on our floor. She has also been a great friend and comfort to me this past year. She is always there for me if I need to talk about something, and ready to give advice if I need it. Another amazing aspect to Hannah is her ability to step up when people need her the most. Earlier this semester, the Secretary to Snarr's Hall Council stepped down for personal reasons, and after talking to Hannah, she said she was more than willing to help out. She has done an awesome job so far as Secretary. She has also been involved in RHA, and she's on the Conduct Committee. She has had an amazing year, and I feel she deserves to be Student of the Month for April. :)

     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 5/4/2003 12:07:44 PM
Reason: This community has been excellent all year. They spend social time together, they participate in floor activities, they were very involved in Hall Olympics (7th place with 7575 points), their floor is always decorated nicely, and stories about the 2nd West Holmquist ghost have been shared and this has brought them closer together. Often times it is very easy for RAs and residents to feel and act out the concept that, "these are upperclassmen, they don't need programs and activities, they just want to be left alone." That is not the case on 2nd West Holmquist and I feel it speaks to the quality of the residents on the floor who care about each other and take their education seriously and also the excellent leadership of their compassionate, creative, and fun-loving RA: Amanda Ziegler. Amanda was recently awarded the NGH Programmer of the Year award, and that is certainly an individual achievement for her initiative, but it is also recognition for her floor, who actively participated in the programs she provided. A final point that demonstrates this is the Hall Olympics example: Amanda couldn't earn over 7,000 points by herself (which by the way was a goal of the NGH staff this year that each floor earn over 7,000 points).

  Nominee Email: connerbe@mnstate.edu
     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 5/4/2003 12:15:59 PM
Reason: Our director of Housing, Beth Conner is one of the most concerned and caring individuals I know. There is a lot expected of our department and often that is an expectation of perfection while receiving little support or collaboration from our critics. We have had a number of serious situations in the last month to deal with and she has always remained committed and focused on addressing the needs of our students. She has demonstrated a desire to improve our department and our facilities and has been intentional about seeking student/staff input through her Housing Advisory committee, visiting RA staff meetings, discussing ideas with students, welcoming student staff initiative on suggesting ways for improving our department, and utilizing the Hall Councils and Residence Hall Association as a voice for our students. On a personal note she has been very supportive of me in my search for another position by dealing with some of the situations that have arisen while I was out of town, taking time to do phone reference calls/letters of reference for numerous schools, and really encouraging me to critically analyze the options I have and given me much to think about. She does an excellent job and cares about the people she serves.

  Nominee Email: jodeepepple@hotmail.com
     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 5/4/2003 12:27:24 PM
Reason: JoDee has been an excellent Treasurer for NGH Hall Council. This is because of her maturity, through this year as a freshman she has really proven that she is responsible and a serious student. The finances of student organizations are something that make advisors cringe, as it is very easy to overspend the budget. In my capacity, I am not the direct advisor to Hall Council, so I am even more removed, but because of JoDee's diligence and accurate records, I have never felt uneasy. I know that she is on top of things. Other characteristics that I feel are worthy of noting: JoDee got involved with Organization of Latino Americana early on as well as their Generation Action which does diversity workshop outreach to area high schools and she was voted Princess for DragonFrost this year. She is a wonderful person and I am proud of all that she has done this year and am thankful that she will be the National Communications Coordinator for RHA next year. We need more students like JoDee.

  Nominee Email: dr_ellie23@yahoo.com
     Nominated By: Ryan Sylvester
     Date Submitted: 5/4/2003 12:35:49 PM
Reason: Educational Program of the Month: Respect Yourself. Danielle Riebe and Amanda Ziegler organized this excellent educational program for the NGH community. They demonstrated a number of things that I feel are worthy of recognition: 1. Educational programming is something that we don't always do a good job of bringing into the halls. It is easier to take residents to educational programs, but the residence halls are a powerful context for learning and we need to do more to bring the learning into the halls, Danielle and Amanda did this. 2. Collaboration. The common feeling is that RAs have to go it alone, and focus on only their floor. With educational programs especially, it makes sense to collaborate to attract more residents and to better utilize resources. I also like the way they collaborated with Hall Council to gain sponsorship. 3. Use of Community Resources. MSUM and the F/M community have a number of resources to utilize for programming efforts, and Danielle and Amanda took advantage of the outreach services that the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center provides. The end result was a great speaker who shared valuable information on relationships and the services that their agency provides to a group of about 15 residents who attended the event. We need more efforts like this.

Reason: Jo has been an incredible RA all year. She has developed a strong and vibrant community on her floor and has been very supportive of her fellow staff. This last month Jo went on an extended vacation and had to miss classes and be away from the floor. I really appreciate the fact that she came to me very early on when she was hoping to go and asked if it was alright if she could be away. This provided her ample time to make necessary arrangements for her work. She worked very hard to find people to cover her desk and duty shifts well in advance. She discussed her absence with her residents and staff and her fellow staff were willing to stop by the floor now and then and be accessible. Her residents were seriously worried about not having someone to be there for them, some may think this is an indication that they are too needy, but I think it indicates that Jo provides a lot of excellent support and they enjoy her company and respect/trust her and that is not something that is easy to replace and is difficult to "give up" even if it's only a week.

Reason: Diversity Program: An Evening of Multicultural Arts. This program is worthy of recognition for what it provided to our students, the university and the community. The program featured various cultural performances both locally and regionally. Organization of an event of this caliber is very demanding, and the fact that Janette, as a student was able to coordinate this event among all her other involvements and a demanding class schedule is truly remarkable. I wasn't able to attend the event unfortunately, but I have heard nothing but positive comments about it from those who were able to attend. She collaborated with a number of organizations on campus, had excellent publicity on and off campus, and provided a venue for people to explore diversity through the arts. We need more events like this for students to explore and learn more about diversity, thank you for providing this excellent event!!!

Reason: Amanda and Nina as advisors to NGH Hall Council have done a truly remarkable job. They have really developed students into leaders, allowing the students to take leadership and ownership of their Hall Council. I know that their weekly executive board member meetings have been very productive and Amanda and Nina have given them tools they need to make their jobs easier and helped them be prepared to facilitate effective and productive meetings. The Hall Council has done a lot this year (just take a look at http://www.mnstate.edu/rha/ngh/ ). As well it has had good attendance throughout the year, the NCC for RHA expressed his enjoyment of attending the meetings, and its executive board is already selected for next year and almost all of the positions are filled. We have great student leaders in NGH Hall Council, but behind them are wonderful advisors in Amanda and Nina!

Reason: Think back to all the times Raul has been nominated this year and how each of those nominations have been worthy of recognition. Now add to that, Raul was very involved during Dragon Days, helping to give tours to our future tours. He gave more tours than any other staff member and did so with energy and passion. He was excited to greet the residents and introduce them to their future home away from home. Without his effort we wouldn't have been able to facilitate tours as quickly as we did. This is truly above and beyond, because Raul did more than his fair share. In addition, Raul has recently organized a discussion among the RAs on how to improve our conduct system. He took time to develop a proposal, organized a time for interested RAs to discuss the proposal, did an incredible job facilitating discussion, and has brought the results of the discussion to the director of housing. On top of this, Raul was the student coordinator for the Latino Unity Conference, this is a major responsibility and he did an excellent job carrying out his responsibilities. I'm very proud of his efforts and someone I feel truly lucky to have met and gotten to know over the last two years. I am thankful that he will be on staff again next year!

Reason: Stacy and Emily are absolutely amazing! At the beginning of the semester they both notified me that they wanted to put on a "Luau" type program. Just this last week, we had a very successful event with the residents from 3rd West Ballard. With the help of these two residents, I was able to provide a night of fun not only for my residents, but for the male residents who currently do not have an RA on their floor. Stacy and Emily came to Hall Council to ask for money to fund this program. They also went out and bought all of the Hawaiian decorations. With my busy schedule, there was no way that I would have been able to put this program together by myself. I am so grateful for these two residents. We were able to have an amazing turn out and an awesome program! Thank you so much!!

Reason: With the recent loss of their RA, 3rd West Ballard has pulled together as a community to finish out the year successfully. I have had numerous contacts with these residents within the past few weeks and it has truly been an honor! These residents are not only humorous and comical, they are appreciative and respectful. Last Tuesday, the majority of the residents attended my "Luau/Sand Volleyball" program. I was a little nervous about attendence, but they certainly proved me wrong. Not only did they participate, they all made T-shirts with nicknames from the movie "Top Gun." They also provided music from the "Top Gun" soundtrack to make the evening an absolute blast! This floor has inspired me to continue programming up until the last day of school. Next week we have a basketball game planned and possibly a picnic/softball game. These residents are awesome and they certainly deserve to be recognized.

Reason: Amy, or should I say RAmy is one of the most enthusiastic and outgoing people I know. I have known Amy since last year and not only is she an amazing friend, great listener, and super RA, she takes the time to go that extra mile to make someone's day. About two months ago, I received an e-mail from Amy, one of my future staff members for the 2003-04 year. She wanted me to write an individual letter to each of the new staff members. She also came to my room and read me all of the things she is going to put into a packet for next year's RA's. Just listening to the stories, poems, and advice articles she compiled, I was truly impressed. She has taken the time to find this information and re-type each page. I am proud to call her one of my staff members for next year and I cannot wait to see her in action with her new residents. Amy deserves to be recognized for everything she does. Not only is she a hard worker, she maintains good grades. She was recognized at the Honors Convocation last week. With the hectic RA life, she has also pulled through academically and that is certainly worth some recognition.
