About
NEW Leadership
-
The Tri-College NEWLeadership is a
five-day residential program designed to
provide leadership training,
inspiration, and support for women who
do not already have extensive leadership
experience.
-
There is a particular emphasis on
recruiting women from groups that have
typically been underrepresented voices
in the political process, such as women
of color, low-income women, and women
with disabilities.
-
Participants attend workshops on running
for office, public speaking, community
organizing, public policy advocacy, and
working with the media. They meet with
over twenty women leaders, including
state and local officials, women in
tribal government, and grassroots
activists, who discuss running for
office, balancing public and private
lives, and means of addressing public
policy issues.
-
Participants and some women leaders
reside on campus throughout the
institute, extending learning beyond the
formal daytime sessions and providing
opportunities to build strong ties with
women who are already experienced public
leaders.
-
Participants apply what they learn to
exercises that develop skills for
working with the media, public speaking,
and community organizing.
-
After the institute, each participant
will develop a written plan for working
on an issue affecting her community.
Who
should apply?
-
Applicants who are interested in politics,
leadership, public service, or community
service, and have a desire to develop their own
leadership skills are encouraged to apply.
-
You
DO NOT need to be a college student, political science major,
be involved in formal political roles such as
student government, or even consider yourself a
leader now, to be considered.
-
Each year, we will invite approximately 40
community and college women to participate.
